The Hitcher is HOUSE 13’s darkness threat. Its official Badge says it settles on a player in the dark and tells that player to return to a lit room before the time in darkness runs out. The reliable response is navigation, not confrontation: stop the optional task, move to a room the game recognizes as lit, and wait for the live effect to confirm safety.
Establish safe light before you need it
At the start of a run, identify at least one clearly lit room and the shortest route to it from the visitor point, important windows, and closets. Walk those routes while the house is calm. A route that looks obvious on a video may differ with current room states or become unsafe after the Nester claims an area.
Do not assume every bright object is a valid safe destination. The official wording says “lit room,” not merely “light source.” A portable light, decorative glow, doorway spill, or flashing beam may not satisfy that condition. Use the current game’s visual or status feedback to learn which room ends the danger.
Plan a second lit destination when possible. If the usual room becomes claimed or the route is blocked by another event, you need a decision already made. Wandering between two untested bright corners spends the limited darkness time without proving either is safe.
Hitcher response sequence
Solo movement plan
Avoid starting a long visitor inspection from a dark position. If the game lets you control house lighting, do not change several rooms at once before understanding how the Hitcher recognizes them. Keep the path from the door to known light short and free of unnecessary turns.
When the warning appears, do not finish a nonessential check. Move first. Once safe, decide whether to return to the visitor or handle another threat. If the run continues after a late response, record the effect and room state rather than assuming every mode has the same penalty.
Squad response
Assign one player to call safe-light routes. When a teammate announces the Hitcher, answer with a destination: “lit front room” is more useful than “come back.” Other players should avoid blocking the doorway and should warn if the planned route crosses a Nester-claimed room.
The effect may be individual or shared, but the official Badge does not say. Each affected player should follow their own live indicator. Do not make one player remaining safe proof that everyone is clear. Confirm by name when the danger ends, then restore normal roles.
Common mistakes
Players often run toward the brightest object instead of a room already verified by the game. Others remain in darkness while arguing about who is affected, or take a long route because it was used in an older recording. A Nester can also invalidate a familiar path, while a Reacher warning can pull the assigned responder in another direction.
Faster Movement may reduce travel time, but its gamepass description publishes no exact speed and cannot make an unsafe destination count as lit. Route choice and early recognition remain the foundation. Do not buy it solely to compensate for not knowing where safety is.
Test light sources responsibly
Only test a questionable light source when the selected mode and run state make the risk acceptable. Record the starting room, source, warning, route, and whether the effect cleared. Compare a fixed room light, any portable light, and doorway spill separately; do not combine results from several conditions.
Tie observations to the current date and mode. The exact darkness timer, valid light definition, stacking behavior, warning cues, and whether Hard changes the window are not in first-party public text. A single lucky recovery is not enough to publish a universal countdown.
Recovery after a failure
Move the normal waiting position closer to recognized light. Replace vague callouts with a named room. If the route contains a dark turn, practice it or choose a simpler path. If a claimed room blocks it, establish the alternate before the next visitor event begins.
If a revive occurs, verify the lighting and room state before leaving the respawn point. Infinite Revives is an official product, but the listing does not say whether the Hitcher timer resets or whether a revived player remains eligible for a mode completion Badge.
Evidence status
The name Hitcher, Badge ID 2411742504410368, darkness attachment, expiring darkness time, and return-to-lit-room response are official. Exact timing, valid light sources, visual and audio cues, affected-player scope, damage, mode scaling, multiplayer synchronization, and revive behavior still need current in-game testing.
Use the Nester guide if a room itself becomes unsafe, the Reacher guide for window alarms, and Modes before attempting a longer route.
